How did the 1,105% increase come about? Nigerians question INEC as Gov’ Okpebholo polling unit voters jumped from 397 to 4,783
Questions have been raised over the reported number of registered voters at the polling unit of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, following claims that the figure increased from 397 in 2024 to 4,783 in 2026.
The reported figures represent an increase of 4,386 registered voters, or approximately 1,105 per cent, within two years.
The development has prompted calls for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify the figures and explain the circumstances surrounding the reported increase.
The concerns have also drawn attention to Okpebholo’s reported target of securing between 2.5 million and 3.5 million votes in Edo State. Critics have questioned how the target could be achieved in light of historical voter turnout figures.
However, attention has now shifted to the reported changes in the voter register at the governor’s polling unit, with questions about whether the increase resulted from a registration exercise, a change in polling unit boundaries, a correction of earlier records or another administrative process.
Those raising concerns have urged INEC to make the relevant voter register available and provide a transparent explanation of the figures.
The issue has also renewed calls for greater transparency in the publication and management of voter registration records, particularly as political parties and candidates prepare for future elections.
Nevertheless, the reported figures alone do not establish that electoral fraud occurred or that the voter register was manipulated. Verification of the records and an explanation from INEC would be necessary to determine the reason for the apparent increase.
The commission is therefore being urged to address the concerns with verifiable documentation and clear information about the registration records in question.
Public confidence in the electoral process depends, in part, on the transparency and credibility of voter registration. An explanation supported by official records would help clarify the reported discrepancy and address concerns about the integrity of the register.
