‘I have received a mysterious credit alert,’ Atiku raises alarm, questions how his private account details were leaked

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over a suspicious credit transaction into one of his private bank accounts, describing the incident as a potential breach of financial privacy.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku disclosed that the transfer originated from an individual unknown to him and carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”

According to the statement, neither the former Vice President nor his campaign organisation solicited, authorised or had prior knowledge of the transaction or the individual behind it.

The statement described the development as disturbing, noting that the account involved is a strictly private account whose details are not publicly available.

It questioned how unknown persons allegedly obtained the confidential banking details of the former Vice President.

“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” the statement said.

Atiku’s camp further expressed concern that if the information was accessed through individuals with privileged access, it could amount to a serious abuse of power capable of exposing account holders to criminal threats, including kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and fraud.

The statement called the attention of security agencies to the incident, urging them to investigate the circumstances surrounding the transfer.

It also alleged that the development formed part of a pattern of suspicious activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While cautioning Nigerians against what it described as attempts at character assassination, Atiku’s media office maintained that the former Vice President remained focused on presenting what it called credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
