I will revive ECOMOG, bring Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso back into ECOWAS – Atiku

Former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to strengthen regional security and revive Nigeria’s role in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) if elected president.

Atiku said he would convene ECOWAS leaders to revive the ECOMOG model, which played key roles in peacekeeping operations in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire.

He also criticised the Tinubu administration’s handling of relations with Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso following their withdrawal from ECOWAS.

According to Atiku, the three countries remain part of the West African family and should be brought back into the regional bloc.

“We are one people,” Atiku said, promising to work towards restoring the countries’ membership of ECOWAS.

He also pledged to make the fight against insecurity a major priority of his administration, arguing that stronger regional cooperation would help address security threats affecting Nigeria and other West African countries.

“I will convene ECOWAS leaders to revive ECOMOG model used in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire. Nigeria’s handling of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso exit under Tinubu is condemnable. We are one people, and I promised to bring them back into ECOWAS. I will fight insecurity,” Atiku said.
