I will reopen Nigeria’s land borders if elected President in 2027 – Atiku

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to reopen Nigeria’s land borders if elected president in 2027.

Atiku made the pledge during a Hausa-language interview with the BBC, where he outlined some of his economic policies and plans for the country.

The former Vice President has previously advocated for the reopening of Nigeria’s land borders, arguing that the policy would help revive legitimate cross-border trade and strengthen economic activities in communities bordering neighbouring countries.

He said the closure of the borders had particularly affected northern states sharing boundaries with Cameroon, Chad, Niger Republic and Benin Republic.

According to Atiku, many young Nigerians who depended on legitimate cross-border businesses have suffered significant financial losses as a result of the restrictions.

“The Northern states bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic have suffered greatly from the closure of these borders. Many young people engaged in legitimate cross-border trade have been pushed into bankruptcy. That is why I said I will reopen the borders,” Atiku said.

Atiku is expected to make the reopening of land borders part of his broader economic agenda as the 2027 presidential campaign gathers momentum.
