Insecurity: Nigerians can seek foreign help if Tinubu Govt fails – Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that Nigerians are justified in seeking intervention from the international community if the federal government continues to fail in its responsibility to protect citizens.
Obasanjo spoke during a Christmas Carol event in Jos, Plateau State, on Friday, against the backdrop of worsening insecurity nationwide.
Nigeria has witnessed alarming attacks in recent weeks. Over 200 schoolchildren were abducted in Niger and Kebbi states, while worshippers were kidnapped during a livestreamed church service in Kwara.
In Borno, fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambushed a military convoy and captured Brigadier-General M. Uba alive before executing him. Several other states, including Zamfara, Sokoto and Yobe, have also reported fresh cases of killings and kidnapping.
Speaking candidly, the former president said the Bola Tinubu administration appears overwhelmed, noting that the government must stop “apologising” or “negotiating” with terrorists and instead confront them decisively.
“No matter your religion, where you come from or your profession, we Nigerians are being killed, and our government seems to be incapable of protecting us,” Obasanjo said.
“We are part of the world community, and if our government cannot do it, we have the right to call on the international community to do for us what our government cannot do for us.”
His comments came barely 48 hours after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency and ordered the immediate recruitment of additional security personnel.
