Memo leaks alleged Iswap, Boko Haram plot to attack airport, prison, others facilities in Nigeria

Nigeria’s security agencies have reportedly been placed on high alert following intelligence of a planned attack by suspected sleeper cells linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram, Washington Post have reported. 

According to an internal memo dated April 13 and obtained by The Associated Press, the alleged targets include the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and a prison facility in Abuja, as well as a military detention centre in neighbouring Niger State.

The memo reportedly stated that the attackers aim to free detained terrorists and cause significant damage to critical aviation infrastructure.

“Their intention is to release detained terrorists and inflict significant damage on critical aviation infrastructure,” the memo said.

Authorities also warned that the planned operation may mirror recent attacks carried out in the Niger Republic, particularly in Niamey and Tahoua, where aviation and military facilities were targeted earlier this year.

Security sources quoted in the report said military and paramilitary agencies have since heightened surveillance and operational readiness to prevent any possible assault.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs Service reportedly said he was unaware of the memo, while no formal public statement had been issued by the military at the time of the report.

The development comes amid broader security concerns across Nigeria, especially in the North, where insurgency, banditry, kidnappings and attacks on public infrastructure remain major challenges.
