Military salary hike: Ndume Calls for direct payment of funds to troops

Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume, has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure that funds for the recently approved salary increase for Nigerian military personnel are transferred directly to the Armed Forces.

Ndume, a former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, made the call in a statement on Tuesday, describing the salary review as evidence that the President is committed to addressing insecurity in the country.

He said direct funding would help ensure that the approved increase reaches military personnel without delays or unnecessary deductions.

Recall that President Tinubu last week approved a salary increase for about 250,000 personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of measures aimed at improving their welfare and strengthening the fight against insecurity.

Reacting, the lawmaker said, “The President should ensure direct transfer of this funds to for the military. This coming after his recent expansion of military divisions from eight to 12 shows that Mr. President has his own blueprint aimed at dealing with the scourge of terrorism and banditry.

“The review of salary will go a long way in motivating our military personnel. I have been in the vanguard of better motivation for our men and officers in the military in terms of a decent living wage.

“President Tinubu has once again proved that he is a responsive leader who doesn’t shut his mind to genuine and legitimate agitation of Nigerians,” he said.

However, the Borno South senator noted that better pay alone will not win the war against insurgency, urging the government to also ensure prompt supply of arms, ammunition and other logistics.
