The Obi-in-Council of Onitsha, Anambra State, has announced that the kingdom will remain politically neutral and will not endorse any candidate in the forthcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the council’s Chief of Staff, Osita Anionwu and reviewed by Very Nigerian, the council emphasized that Onitsha, as a community, will not be drawn into partisan politics.

Anionwu explained that while Onitsha indigenes have the constitutional right to support any political party or candidate, such involvement must be strictly in their personal capacity.

“Some Onitsha indigenes, including chiefs and leaders of constituent groups, have been invited to attend campaign rallies. It must be clearly understood that they do so as private citizens, not as representatives of the community,” the statement noted.

The council reaffirmed that the city’s main priority remains communal peace and unity, stating that all constituent groups within the kingdom are politically non-partisan but will continue to cooperate with duly elected governments at all levels.

“As Nigeria is a multi-party democracy, every citizen has the right to belong to, attend rallies, and canvass for any political party of their choice without coercion.”

“However, for the sake of unity, all Onitsha groups are politically neutral,” it added.

The council also urged eligible voters in the community to participate actively in the election by registering and voting for candidates of their choice without fear or intimidation.

“It must be clearly understood that individuals attending political events do so in their private capacity and not as representatives or leaders of their constituent groups,” it emphasized.
