PDP hands Ogun Central Senate ticket to Iyabo Obasanjo after return from APC

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State has formally welcomed back former senator Iyabo Obasanjo and presented her with the party’s senatorial ticket for Ogun Central ahead of next year’s election.

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented Ogun Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011 before losing her re-election bid.

After spending years in academia in the United States, she returned to active politics earlier this year and initially joined the All Progressives Congress, where she sought the party’s governorship ticket.

However, following her unsuccessful bid for the APC governorship ticket, she resigned from the party on May 31 and returned to the PDP.

The former senator was officially received at a rally held in Abeokuta, attended by party supporters, PDP members and the party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu.

Presenting the PDP flag to Obasanjo, Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, announced her as the party’s candidate for the Ogun Central senatorial seat.

Accepting the nomination, Obasanjo pledged loyalty to the PDP and promised to serve with integrity, humility and dedication.

“I commit myself to the ideals of the PDP. I shall serve the people of Ogun State and Nigeria with integrity, humility, and dedication, prioritising their welfare above personal and sectional interests,” she said.

The former senator also explained that her departure from the APC was motivated by what she described as disrespect, betrayal and unfair treatment by the party leadership.

She maintained that she remains a formidable political force in Ogun Central and argued that her record in the Senate distinguishes her from other contenders.

Meanwhile, Adebutu used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to local government autonomy and transparent governance if elected governor.

He pledged prudent management of public resources and assured supporters that local governments would receive their statutory allocations without interference.
