Police apprehend Baruwa after NURTW Secretariat takeover in Abuja
Police on Monday arrested Tajudeen Baruwa hours after he led members of his faction to take control of the national secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Abuja, escalating the union’s long-running leadership crisis.
Baruwa and his supporters had earlier stormed the union’s headquarters, seizing control from the rival faction led by Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.
Authorities later moved in and took Baruwa into custody following the takeover.
The takeover and subsequent arrest mark the latest flashpoint in a bitter internal power struggle between the Baruwa and MC Oluomo factions that has torn through the union since 2024.
Members of the NURTW had elected MC Oluomo as National President in November 2024, but a court subsequently ruled in Baruwa’s favour when the dispute escalated into litigation, laying the groundwork for Monday’s dramatic events.
