Public outcry trails First Lady’s vehicle donation to APC Women Leaders amid kidnapping crisis

As kidnapped victims from the recent Oyo State incident remain in captivity and insecurity continues to affect several parts of the country, fresh political developments around the Presidency have sparked renewed public debate over timing, priorities, and political messaging.

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has come under public scrutiny following reports of the distribution of luxury vehicles to APC women leaders, even as many Nigerians continue to demand urgent action to address insecurity and worsening socio-economic conditions.

Nigeria is still grappling with persistent security challenges, including kidnappings, banditry, and violent attacks in several regions. The Oyo kidnapping case, where victims are reportedly still being held, has further heightened national concern and deepened frustration over safety and government response.

Against this backdrop, the political gesture has drawn mixed reactions, with critics questioning the optics of large-scale political mobilisation efforts at a time of widespread hardship, while supporters argue it reflects legitimate party organisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Adding to the political momentum, the First Lady on Wednesday officially launched the Tinubu Torchbearers (TTB), a political mobilisation platform within the All Progressives Congress (APC) designed to strengthen grassroots support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The event, held at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, brought together APC women leaders and key stakeholders from across the federation.

Addressing participants, Senator Tinubu urged women to take a central role in projecting the administration’s achievements and mobilising support for the Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing the need for deeper outreach down to ward and polling unit levels across the country.

The launch of the group, alongside the distribution of vehicles to party women leaders, has further intensified discussions around the intersection of governance, political preparation, and public perception as Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general elections.

While supporters maintain that such initiatives are part of legitimate political engagement within party structures, critics argue that they risk being perceived as disconnected from the immediate realities of insecurity and hardship facing many Nigerians.

As the political season gradually unfolds, these developments are expected to continue shaping public debate on leadership priorities, governance responsibility, and the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s pre-election landscape.
