Senate confirms Tinubu’s nominee Kingsley Udeh as Minister
The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Kingsley Udeh (SAN) as minister, following his screening at the red chamber in Abuja on Thursday.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had formally requested Udeh’s confirmation on Tuesday, a request read to the Senate by President Godswill Akpabio during plenary.
Udeh’s nomination comes after the resignation of Uche Nnaji, the former Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, who stepped down last month amid controversy over his academic credentials, including questions regarding a degree allegedly obtained from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Nnaji, the only cabinet member from Enugu State, resigned after public pressure, leaving the state without representation in the Federal Executive Council.
After the President’s letter was read, Akpabio referred Udeh’s nomination to the Committee of the Whole for screening and legislative action.
The Senate resumed on Thursday, suspending its rules to allow the committee and other officials accompanying Udeh into the chamber. He was led in by the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado.
Akpabio explained that the screening did not take place on Wednesday due to a delay in receiving security clearance.
The report, which arrived late Wednesday, confirmed that Udeh has no criminal record.
Following brief questions in the chamber, Udeh was asked to take a bow and leave, after which the Senate confirmed his appointment.
