Stop electing dullards as Governors, ADC candidate tells Nigerians

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State, Biodun Collins Ogundipe, has urged Nigerians to stop electing what he described as “dullards” into public office, insisting that competence, capacity and character should guide voting decisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ogundipe made the remarks during a media chat in Abeokuta on Monday, where he blamed poor leadership at the state level for Nigeria’s developmental challenges.

According to him, many states have remained underdeveloped because voters repeatedly elect individuals who lack the vision, knowledge and capacity required for effective governance.

He called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to carefully scrutinise candidates and support only those with verifiable track records and clear development plans.

> “Forget about all these guys who will come and campaign to you and say, ‘Don’t worry, when you get there, grab it, run away, steal it.’ Those days are gone,” he said.

Ogundipe argued that political campaigns should focus on concrete plans for improving the lives of citizens rather than empty slogans.

He said candidates seeking public office should be able to demonstrate achievements either in business or previous leadership roles before asking to manage public resources.

> “If they say they run a business, let them show us how they have built that business so that we know we are entrusting the allocation and resources of the state to competent hands,” he added.

The ADC candidate also criticised what he described as the neglect of grassroots communities, insisting that governance should be centred on improving the welfare of ordinary people.

Speaking on security, Ogundipe maintained that modern policing requires intelligence and technology rather than the acquisition of expensive military hardware.

According to him, insecurity can be better addressed through artificial intelligence-driven systems capable of predicting, preventing and responding rapidly to threats.

“Security is not about carrying guns to chase criminals after the crime has been committed. It is not about buying armoured tanks.

“You see all these governors, dullards is what you elect as governors. They spend billions buying armoured tanks and patrol vehicles when these problems can be solved through artificial intelligence-driven solutions,” he said.

Ogundipe urged Nigerians to demand detailed governance blueprints from candidates before casting their votes in future elections.
