Tension high as PDP factions brace for showdown at Wadata Plaza Tuesday
A major confrontation is expected on Tuesday as the two rival factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepare to hold separate meetings at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
The newly elected leadership, led by Turaki, has scheduled its inaugural National Working Committee (NWC) meeting for 10 a.m. at the Wadata Plaza Secretariat in Wuse Zone 5.
At the same venue and just an hour later, the Samuel Anyanwu-led faction, loyal to the FCT Minister, plans to hold a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting by 11 a.m.
Speaking after a meeting with the FCT Commissioner of Police, Turaki said his group is prepared to confront anyone attempting to derail the party’s activities, insisting they are ready to defend the PDP “with their blood.”
He maintained that members of the Anyanwu faction are no longer part of the party, claiming they were expelled during the National Convention.
Turaki explained that his team had notified the police of their scheduled activities to avoid any breakdown of law and order.
“As law-abiding people, we came to inform the police about our inaugural NWC meeting scheduled for tomorrow,” he said.
“We have invited all our stakeholders, our governors, National Assembly members, Board of Trustees, state chairmen, and other critical figures.”
He dismissed the NEC meeting announced by the rival faction as illegal, saying:
“People who are planning to hold a NEC meeting are no longer members of this party. Our National Convention expelled them.”
Turaki stressed that the Convention remains the highest decision-making body of the PDP, adding that they expect the police to ensure peace at the Secretariat.
He also warned that his group would not allow any unauthorized person to occupy the party office.
“We will go there, open our offices, and begin to perform the duties for which we were elected. Anyone sitting there without our permission is an interloper,” he said.
The PDP chairman insisted they were ready to defend the party and Nigeria’s democracy if challenged.
“To defend our party and this nascent democracy, we are prepared to lay down our lives,” he said. “We will be at the Secretariat by 10 a.m. tomorrow. I will lead from the front.”
According to Turaki, the FCT Commissioner of Police has assured them of adequate security to prevent violence and maintain order during the meetings.
