Tinubu approves major NYSC reform as FEC moves to overhaul scheme
The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), paving the way for a major overhaul of the 53-year-old national service scheme.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, announced the decision on Monday while briefing State House correspondents after the FEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to the minister, the approval covers a full review of the NYSC to ensure the scheme reflects Nigeria’s current realities and national development priorities.
Olawande explained that the NYSC was established in 1973 after the Nigerian Civil War to promote national unity and integration by deploying graduates to states other than their states of origin for one year of compulsory national service.
He noted that over the past five decades, the scheme has played a significant role in fostering unity by bringing together young Nigerians from different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.
The minister, however, said the changing needs of the country have made it necessary to review the objectives and operations of the scheme.
> “Our needs as a country have changed, and many expect the objectives of the NYSC to also change,” Olawande said.
He added that the reform is aimed at repositioning the NYSC to better meet contemporary national challenges and contribute more effectively to Nigeria’s development.
Further details of the approved reforms are expected to be made public by the Federal Government in the coming days.
