Truth, peace and nation-building take centre stage at NUJ FCT Christmas Carol

Journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were celebrated as key drivers of national cohesion, peace and development at the 2025 NUJ FCT Council Christmas Carol, held under the theme “Spreading Truth, Sharing Peace.”

The event, which drew journalists, security agencies, political actors and institutional partners, served as a moment of reflection on the media’s responsibility in promoting accurate information, fostering unity and strengthening democratic governance.

Speaking at the gathering, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, described the theme as timely, noting that truth remains society’s compass even amid uncertainty.

She praised journalists for their resilience and professionalism throughout the year, particularly in accountability reporting, justice advocacy and giving voice to issues critical to national development.

According to her, journalists do not spread truth to inflame tensions but to heal divisions and promote peaceful coexistence, adding that the profession carries a moral duty to unite society rather than polarise it.

She expressed appreciation to partners of the union for their support in 2025 and called for deeper collaboration in the coming year, urging journalists to remain ambassadors of peace in their work and personal spaces.

Also addressing the gathering, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Chairmanship candidate for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Dr Obinna Simon, underscored the role of the media in safeguarding the credibility of electoral processes.

He said responsible journalism is central to helping citizens distinguish facts from misinformation and ensuring public confidence in democracy.

Simon disclosed that his team had reviewed a list of needs presented by journalists and pledged support, describing the gesture as a modest contribution in recognition of the sacrifices journalists make in the line of duty.

Representing the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, a senior police officer reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to working closely with journalists to promote peace and security across the Territory.

She noted that journalists and security personnel often share similar risks in the course of duty, united by a common goal of protecting lives and keeping the public informed.

She described the Christmas Carol as a symbol of shared values including unity, compassion and hope, which continue to define the partnership between the FCT Police Command and the NUJ.

In a lighter moment, she applauded the strong female presence in the choir and hinted at possible police participation in future editions.

The NUJ FCT Christmas Carol concluded with a renewed call for stronger collaboration in 2026, as participants agreed that spreading truth and sharing peace remain vital to building a safer, more united and democratic society.
