Wike unveils new housing plans for FCT judges, says Tinubu committed to judiciary
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced fresh plans to expand housing and infrastructural support for judicial officers in the nation’s capital, underscoring President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary for enhanced service delivery.
Wike made the pledge on Monday at the Special Court session marking the commencement of the 2025/2026 Legal Year of the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
According to him, new budgetary allocations have been secured to build additional residential quarters for judges of the FCT High Court, a move he said would ease accommodation shortages and provide a more conducive environment for judicial work.
The minister emphasized that modern courtrooms, well-equipped chambers, and secure accommodation remain central to efficient justice delivery.
He disclosed that under President Tinubu, the FCTA had officially handed over the Certificate of Occupancy for the Supreme Court’s land and begun perimeter fencing of the entire complex to prevent encroachment and enhance security.
“This swift and long-awaited intervention restores confidence to the apex court, something previous administrations did not address,” he stated.
Wike highlighted several ongoing judiciary-support projects funded through the FCTA, including:
Construction of fortified residential quarters for Heads of Courts in the FCT
A new Magistrates’ Court Complex in Jabi District
Staff quarters for the Nigerian Law School
Design and construction of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division complex
New residences for Justices of the National Industrial Court and Federal High Court, Abuja Divisions
He explained that the administration’s thinking is simple: judges perform better when given secure, humane and distraction-free living conditions.
“As we step into the new Legal Year, we remain determined to consolidate the gains already made and expand support where it is most needed,” Wike said.
He added that the FCTA would fast-track completion of the Jabi Magistrate Court Complex and the new residential quarters for Heads of Courts, while also driving the digitisation of court processes across Abuja to improve efficiency and reduce bureaucratic delays.
Wike reaffirmed that justice must never be compromised, calling on all actors, judges, lawyers, government agencies, and citizens, to work collectively to strengthen Nigeria’s justice system.
He expressed confidence that the 2025/2026 Legal Year would usher in “unprecedented success, wisdom and efficiency” for the Court of Appeal and the broader judiciary.
