United Nigeria Airlines accepts apologies from VeryDarkMan, Mr Jollof after onboard brawl
United Nigeria Airlines has accepted public apologies from social media influencers Martins Otse (VeryDarkMan) and Freedom Atsepoyi (Mr Jollof) following a physical altercation aboard a flight on Monday.
The clash occurred during boarding at Asaba International Airport and has sparked nationwide discussion on passenger conduct and aviation safety.
In a statement on Thursday, the airline confirmed the acceptance of the apologies issued via the influencers’ social media accounts.
The airline noted that both individuals committed to refraining from behaviour that could compromise aviation safety, order, or decorum on United Nigeria Airlines flights or other carriers.
The airline emphasized its collaboration with the Airline Operators of Nigeria and regulatory authorities in addressing unruly passenger behaviour, urging travellers to cooperate with airline personnel and security agencies to ensure the safety of air travel.
The brawl took place on Flight UN0523 from Asaba to Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Circulating videos showed the influencers grappling and exchanging blows, causing panic among passengers and requiring crew intervention.
Both men were deboarded and handed over to security personnel at Asaba Airport.
Reports indicate that the altercation stemmed from a longstanding online feud dating back to 2024, with VeryDarkMan previously threatening to confront Mr Jollof in person.
In a video apology on Instagram, VeryDarkMan, appearing with bandages, expressed remorse for delaying passengers, taking full responsibility for the incident, and apologizing to fellow travellers, airline staff, and the public. He said, “What happened yesterday was not supposed to happen, and I will take full responsibility for it.”
Mr Jollof also issued an Instagram apology, stating he acted in self-defense and describing himself as “not a violent person.”
He extended apologies to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, passengers, and his family, assuring that such incidents would not recur.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) condemned the fight as a serious violation of aviation regulations, warning that unruly passenger behaviour could lead to criminal prosecution, including potential jail time.
