US delist Syria from terrorism sponsor list

The United States has officially removed Syria from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism following the completion of a mandatory 45-day notification period to Congress.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the development in a statement on Monday.

Rubio also confirmed the removal of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from its designation as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

The decisions mark a significant shift in Washington’s policy toward Syria and the group, following the conclusion of the required congressional review period.

The top US diplomat noted that the actions represent another historic step by President Donald Trump to give Syria, under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a path to prosperity.

Washington commended Syria for joining the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS and conducting operations to disrupt the terror networks of ISIS, al-Qaeda, Hezbollah and Iran-aligned groups.

Rubio said rescinding Syria’s designation clears “the final major barriers” to private-sector investment and promotes the nation’s economic recovery and reintegration into the global economy.

In June 2025, President Trump directed sanctions relief for the Middle Eastern country in recognition of positive changes and counterterrorism measures taken by its government.

Western support for Syria has been growing under President al-Sharaa, who has committed to sustained efforts against international terrorism, foreign fighters and ISIS.

Following US-led diplomacy, the UN Security Council lifted sanctions on al-Sharaa last November, citing his commitments to united action against terrorism and the protection of human rights.
