WAFCON 2026: Oshoala fires Super Falcons to crucial 1-0 win over Zambia
Nigeria’s Super Falcons revived their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia in their second Group C match on Saturday, thanks to an early goal from Asisat Oshoala.
The nine-time African champions went into the match under pressure after Malawi defeated Egypt 3-1 earlier in the day. A loss to Zambia would have knocked Nigeria out of the group stage and ended their hopes of reaching the World Cup.
Oshoala made the difference in the eighth minute. Her first attempt was saved by the Zambian goalkeeper, but the rebound fell kindly back to her, allowing the experienced forward to calmly slot the ball into the net.
Their defensive capabilities were, however, put to the test when Oluwatosin Demehin was shown a straight red card in the 40th minute, and they had to play the remainder of the first half and the entire second half with 10 players.
The win takes Nigeria to second with a superior head-to-head and need to Egypt convincingly in their final group stage match to advance to the quarter-finals.
