World Cup: Brazil finish top of Group C with convincing 3-0 win over Scotland
Scotland’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time remain in serious doubt after a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brazil in their final Group C match in Miami.
Steve Clarke’s side entered the encounter knowing that a positive result would significantly boost their chances of progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. However, a series of costly defensive mistakes allowed the five-time world champions to secure a comfortable victory and finish top of the group.
Brazil took the lead early after Scotland defender Scott McKenna was dispossessed in a dangerous area, allowing young winger Rayan to set up Vinicius Junior, who calmly slotted home his third goal of the tournament.
The South Americans thought they had doubled their advantage shortly afterwards when Vinicius Jr capitalised on another defensive lapse, but VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for a foul on Jack Hendry.
Brazil eventually got their second goal in first-half stoppage time as Vinicius Jr headed home at the back post after Scotland failed to clear their lines.
Despite showing flashes of attacking intent, Scotland struggled to contain Brazil’s pace and quality. Their hopes of a comeback were effectively ended in the second half when Matheus Cunha fired home Brazil’s third goal after Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes won possession in midfield.
Scotland created a handful of chances, including a header from Scott McTominay and several penalty appeals, but failed to find a breakthrough against Brazil goalkeeper Alisson.
The defeat leaves Scotland on three points and with a goal difference that may prove crucial as they await the outcome of matches in other groups to determine whether they can qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
For Brazil, the victory confirmed top spot in Group C and reinforced their status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, with Vinicius Jr once again delivering a standout performance.
Scotland must now endure an anxious wait to discover whether their World Cup journey will continue or end at the group stage once again.
