Yobe Gov approves free healthcare for retired public servants
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has approved free medical care for all state and local government retirees as part of efforts to improve their access to healthcare and reduce the burden of medical expenses in old age.
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, Dr. Babagana Tijjani, disclosed the development during an exclusive interview with Channels Television.
According to Tijjani, the programme will begin with the enrolment of 20,000 retirees as the first phase of implementation.
He explained that the initiative is designed to provide affordable and accessible healthcare services for retired public servants across the state.
The official noted that the programme reflects the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of retirees by ensuring they receive quality medical care without financial strain.
“As part of Governor Buni’s equity programme for the vulnerable individuals has approved the enrollment of all retired state and local government employees to enjoy free medical treatment without paying a single kobo. The exercise is currently taking place across the 17 local government areas of the state,” he said.
He also revealed that 45,000 civil servants have been enrolled into the formal sector programme in the last 7 years. “We have also enrolled 45,000 State and Local Government Civil Servants into the formal sector programme which a civil servant contributes only 1.75 percent of his total salary while the state government contributes 3.25 percent”
“The total number of workers on the enrollment is around 45,000, as said, but on the dashboard is around 35,000 because some have left the service of the state, others died, and others retired,” he said.
On the challenges, he explained that the increasing number of enrollees sometimes makes it difficult to meet their needs, by the health providers, but government is working towards providing the services in all healthcare facilities.
