17 Goals: Messi sets new benchmark in World Cup goalscoring

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after netting his 17th tournament goal during Argentina’s clash against Austria on Monday.

The 38-year-old reached the milestone in the 38th minute, surpassing former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who previously held the record with 16 World Cup goals.

Messi had drawn level with Klose’s tally after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening 2026 World Cup match against Algeria. He now stands alone at the top of the competition’s all-time scoring chart.

The historic strike came in typical Messi fashion, with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner curling a superb effort from the edge of the penalty area to give Argentina the lead against Austria.

Earlier in the game, Messi missed the opportunity to break the record from the penalty spot after sending his effort wide following a foul on Lautaro Martínez inside the box.

Among active players, only Kylian Mbappé appears close to challenging Messi’s new benchmark, having scored 14 World Cup goals so far. Most of the other players on the all-time scoring list have either retired or passed away.

Messi’s latest achievement adds another chapter to a remarkable career that already includes multiple league titles, continental trophies, a World Cup triumph, and a record eight Ballon d’Or awards.
