2027: Defections of Governors won’t guarantee victory – Aregbesola to APC

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has cautioned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against assuming that the influx of governors into its fold would automatically translate into victory in the 2027 general elections.

Aregbesola gave the warning while speaking at the launch of a book authored by the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, insisting that recent electoral outcomes in Nigeria contradict the belief that governors determine election results.

According to him, experiences from past elections—particularly in the South-West and South-East—have shown that having sitting governors does not necessarily guarantee electoral success for any political party.

“There is an assertion going around which is worrisome, especially for those of us who believe in democracy,” Aregbesola said. “They say because about 30 governors are supporting a party, that party is automatically going to win the next election.”

He argued that available electoral data does not support such claims, stressing that the outcome of the last general election clearly disproved the notion.

“Recent statistics in Nigeria do not support this belief. The results of the last election in this country clearly show that governors do not define electoral victory for political parties,” he added.

Aregbesola cited voting patterns from the South-West and South-East as evidence, noting that despite the dominance of APC governors in the South-West during the 2023 elections, the party secured only about 55 per cent of the votes in the zone.

He urged party members and Nigerians to focus on democratic ideals, voter engagement and credibility rather than relying on political realignments and elite endorsements ahead of 2027.
