2027: Wamakko backs Tinubu for second term
Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto North, Aliyu Wamakko, has restated his loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying Sokoto State has benefited greatly from the current administration.
Wamakko spoke on Friday at the Government House in Sokoto during the flag-off of mobilisation funds for the reconstruction of the burnt section of the Sokoto Central Market.
He said the Tinubu administration has shown fairness and inclusiveness in its relationship with state governments across the country.
According to the senator, the federal government has continued to support Sokoto in key areas, stressing that the state has enjoyed attention and assistance under Tinubu’s leadership.
He noted that the president’s approach to governance has strengthened cooperation between the centre and the states.
Wamakko said, “President Tinubu has been consistent in ensuring the prompt release of statutory allocations to all states.
“This has helped governors perform better and deliver development to their people. This is something we must acknowledge and appreciate.”
The APC leader further argued that Sokoto had witnessed a wave of federal appointments under the Tinubu administration, describing it as “unprecedented in the political history of our state.”
Wamakko said, “Never before has Sokoto enjoyed this level of federal attention and representation. It shows commitment to fairness, justice and national unity.”
Wamakko, widely regarded as the political leader of the APC in Sokoto, is believed to be a central figure in mobilising support for President Tinubu in the North-West, a zone considered strategic to Nigeria’s electoral calculations.
His latest endorsement comes at a time when political alignments and early preparations for the 2027 polls are gathering momentum within major parties.
Analysts note that Sokoto was a contested battleground in the 2023 general elections, with both the APC and PDP sharing state and federal wins.
Wamakko’s renewed call for alignment is therefore seen as part of efforts to consolidate the APC’s influence ahead of future elections.
The senator also commended Governor Ahmad Aliyu for developmental strides across Sokoto State, especially in infrastructure renewal and economic revitalisation.
“The governor is doing well, and the projects are there for all to see. We will continue to support him to sustain this momentum,” he said.
The Sokoto Central Market, one of the largest commercial hubs in the North-West, suffered a devastating fire in 2021, crippling hundreds of businesses.
The state government recently awarded reconstruction contracts to indigenous contractors, with mobilisation funds flagged off on Friday as part of the rebuilding plan.
