Kano: Gov. Yusuf names Garo as Deputy

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has nominated Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor, following the resignation of Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

Gwarzo stepped down after a protracted political rift with the governor, largely triggered by his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress. Sources indicated that he had come under increasing pressure to remain aligned with the governor’s political direction but resisted, prompting the initiation of impeachment proceedings by the State House of Assembly.

Amid rising tensions, Gwarzo eventually resigned and subsequently pitched his tent with the African Democratic Congress.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the nomination of Garo was said to be in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a replacement in the event of a vacancy in the deputy governorship position.

The statement added that the nomination followed wide consultations with key political stakeholders, while the governor has formally sought the approval of the State Assembly.

At 48, Garo is regarded as an experienced political figure, having spent over two decades in public service across various roles. His track record includes serving as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.

He also previously held office as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and was the Deputy Governorship candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.

The Kano State Government said the appointment is part of efforts to strengthen governance and improve service delivery across the state.
