2027: Jonathan, Peter Obi hold closed-door talks on in Abuja

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi on Monday held a closed-door meeting as part of ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC Vanguard, mobilisation wing of the African Democratic Congress coalition, shared videos and images of the meeting on its X handle, describing the discussions as “high-level” and focused on the possibility of opposition parties presenting a single presidential candidate.

According to the group, the meeting explored efforts to unify opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi was accompanied by a delegation that included Igbo elders, South-East lawmakers linked to the ADC coalition, and other political associates.

The development comes amid Obi’s sustained nationwide consultations and ongoing talks around a possible political alignment involving former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, as opposition blocs intensify coalition-building efforts.

The meeting also follows last weekend’s opposition summit in Ibadan, where a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ADC, and other political stakeholders resolved to present a consensus presidential candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

The Ibadan meeting, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, brought together key political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and others.

At the end of the summit, participants agreed to work towards a united opposition front aimed at resisting what they described as a drift toward a one-party state and to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
