‘Tinubu chose me’ – Orji Kalu, Okezie Kalu clash over Abia APC leadership
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, and former Abia State governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, have both said President Bola Tinubu directed them to take charge of the All Progressives Congress (APC) affairs in Abia State.
Abia State is currently governed by Dr. Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP).
In separate statements posted on their official Facebook pages at about the same time, both political leaders claimed they were acting on the President’s directive to strengthen and coordinate the party in the state ahead of future elections.
Benjamin Kalu said President Tinubu had insisted that governors manage party affairs in states where the APC controls the government, while top-ranking federal office holders, including the Deputy Speaker, oversee party coordination in opposition-controlled states like Abia.
“Thank you, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for insisting that governors should handle the issues of the party in the states with APC governors, while the highest ranking political office holders like the Deputy Speaker takes care of the affairs in Abia State,” he wrote.
He added that the arrangement had previously strengthened the party during congresses and would help unify the APC in Abia ahead of elections.
On his part, Orji Kalu said he had been tasked by the President to coordinate party activities in the state.
“As the most senior governor in the state, I am committed to working closely with all stakeholders, in line with the President’s directive, to ensure that the APC in Abia produces candidates who are widely acceptable,” he stated.
Both leaders expressed optimism that the APC would emerge stronger and more united in Abia State, with the aim of delivering electoral victory for President Tinubu and the party in future elections.
