Bago appeals for Military support, equipment to battle insecurity
Governor Umaru Bago has called for the creation of Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Mailaka and Kurege, both in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, to help prevent bandits from infiltrating the state.
During a meeting with Maj. Gen. Warrah Idris, Theatre Commander of Operation Fansan Yamma, the governor also appealed for the recruitment of 25,000 Niger indigenes into the army to strengthen the fight against insecurity.
Bago expressed deep concern over abandoned assets in Kainji Lake National Park and Borgu due to bandit activities and requested additional military hardware and air support to intensify operations in affected areas.
While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to peace through non-kinetic approaches, the governor pledged full cooperation with the military in the ongoing war against banditry.
Maj. Gen. Idris explained that his visit to the state was aimed at assessing operational terrains, boosting troop morale, and ensuring effective implementation of the military’s directive to eliminate banditry and terrorism, as ordered by the high command and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He confirmed that active operations are ongoing in Kainji Lake National Park, Babana, and other parts of Borgu, adding that new operational maps for further action will soon be released.
Operation Fansan Yamma is a federal joint military initiative designed to combat insecurity across the North-West and parts of North-Central Nigeria.
