Court dismisses Yahaya Bello’s bid to stop N110bn fraud trial
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja has dismissed an application filed by Yahaya Bello challenging the N110 billion fraud case instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, Justice Maryann Anenih held that the court has the jurisdiction to hear the matter and rejected Bello’s request to strike out the 16-count charge brought against him.
The former Kogi State governor had asked the court to dismiss the case, arguing that the charges were incompetent and that the court lacked the authority to entertain the suit.
However, Justice Anenih ruled that the objections raised by Bello lacked merit and affirmed the court’s power to proceed with the trial.
The decision clears the way for the continuation of the EFCC’s prosecution of Bello over allegations involving the alleged misappropriation and laundering of public funds amounting to N110 billion.
Bello has consistently denied the allegations against him. The case is expected to proceed with further hearings before the FCT High Court.
