It’s bad for all of us — Osimhen speaks on Super Eagles missing the World Cup
Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has spoken candidly about Nigeria’s painful failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the disappointment as a bitter pill shared by the entire national team.
The expanded 48-team tournament, which kicked off last week, has already drawn global attention, but Nigeria’s absence remains one of the continent’s most glaring talking points despite Africa securing nine automatic slots and an additional playoff berth.
Nigeria’s journey ended abruptly after finishing second in their qualification group and subsequently losing to DR Congo in the African playoffs, a result that confirmed a second straight World Cup absence for the Super Eagles.
For Osimhen and many members of the current squad, it marks yet another missed opportunity to grace football’s biggest stage, with Nigeria’s last appearance dating back to the 2018 edition in Russia.
Speaking during a social media livestream, the Napoli forward did not hide his frustration but struck a tone of resilience.
“It’s bad, not just for me but for the rest of the guys,” Osimhen said. “We’ve missed out twice in a row. Sometimes life happens, so we just have to keep moving.”
His comments reflect the growing concern among Nigerian fans over the national team’s declining consistency on the global stage, despite boasting some of Africa’s most talented footballers.
As the World Cup continues without the Super Eagles, attention now turns to rebuilding, restructuring, and restoring Nigeria’s place among football’s elite.
