Kane nets twice as England beat Croatia 4-2 in World Cup opener

England opened their FIFA World Cup campaign with an entertaining victory over Croatia in Dallas, overcoming defensive lapses with an impressive attacking display to secure all three points in Group L.

The Three Lions, under the guidance of manager Thomas Tuchel, showcased their offensive strength but were repeatedly tested by a resilient Croatian side that refused to back down throughout a pulsating encounter.

Captain Harry Kane gave England the lead in the 12th minute from the penalty spot after Noni Madueke was fouled by Croatian captain Luka Modric inside the area.

Although goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic initially saved Kane’s effort, the spot-kick was ordered to be retaken after the Croatian shot-stopper was adjudged to have moved off his line prematurely. Kane made no mistake with his second attempt.

Croatia responded strongly and drew level in the 36th minute when Martin Baturina unleashed a powerful effort that beat Jordan Pickford despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball.

England quickly restored their advantage through Kane, who powered home a header from Declan Rice’s corner three minutes before half-time. The goal was particularly significant as it took Kane level with former England striker Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals while also marking his 81st international goal.

However, Croatia once again found a way back into the contest just before the interval. Ivan Perisic headed the ball across goal for Petar Musa, who guided his finish beyond Pickford to make it 2-2.

England regained control shortly after the restart through Jude Bellingham, whose powerful run and composed finish underlined why Tuchel entrusted him with a starting role.

The goal shifted momentum firmly in England’s favour as the Three Lions began to dominate possession and create more opportunities.

Substitute Marcus Rashford eventually sealed victory five minutes from time, finishing calmly to put the result beyond doubt and cap a memorable opening performance for England.

While the victory will provide encouragement for Tuchel and his players, concerns remain over England’s defensive organisation after conceding twice against a Croatian side that consistently threatened on the counterattack.

Nevertheless, England will be pleased to begin their World Cup journey with maximum points as they prepare for their next Group L fixture against Ghana in Boston.

With Kane already among the goals and Bellingham continuing to influence games at the highest level, England will hope their attacking quality can carry them deep into the tournament while defensive improvements are made along the way.
