NUJ FCT pledges media support for community policing

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has pledged active media support for community policing and called for a comprehensive strategy to tackle the growing menace of “one-chance” robberies in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Chairman of the Council, Comrade Grace Ike, made the commitment while delivering her goodwill message during the operational tour of the FCT Police Command by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Training and Development, DIG Isyaku Mohammed, at the Command Headquarters in Abuja.

Ike said the media would continue to partner with the police by amplifying verified information, sensitising the public on safety measures and highlighting successful operations that restore public confidence.

“We stand ready to support community policing initiatives that bring the police and citizens together.

“Responsible, factual reporting helps build trust, encourages victims to report crimes and amplifies preventive messages that save lives,” she said.

The NUJ FCT Chairman described “one-chance” robberies—where criminals attack passengers in commercial or private vehicles—as a major security challenge in Abuja, noting that women and young commuters are among the most affected.

She said many victims fail to report such incidents because they feel helpless or lack confidence in the system, allowing perpetrators to continue operating with impunity.

Ike called for a holistic response that includes strengthened patrols, intelligence gathering, improved public transport safety measures, community engagement, victim support services and sustained public awareness campaigns.

She also urged the police to continue treating journalists as strategic partners in the fight against crime, stressing that timely dissemination of verified information would help counter misinformation and strengthen public trust.

The NUJ Chairman commended the FCT Police Command’s modernisation efforts and praised the command’s leadership, particularly the Police Public Relations Office, for maintaining a cordial relationship with the media.

She assured that the NUJ FCT Council would continue to promote balanced, factual and accountable reporting that showcases the efforts of the police while promoting respect for the rule of law.

Ike further advocated regular dialogue and capacity-building programmes between journalists and police officers to deepen mutual understanding and improve collaboration in addressing security challenges.

“We need sustained collaboration across government agencies, transport unions, community leaders and the media to close the gaps that enable these crimes,” she said.

She also described the Inspector-General of Police’s operational tour of Zone 7 as a demonstration of the police leadership’s commitment to addressing security realities on the ground and wished DIG Isyaku Mohammed, CP (Prof.) Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi and their teams continued success and safety in the discharge of their duties.
