2027: ‘It’s not the North’s birthright to always rule Nigeria,’ Kwankwaso says

Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has said the North should not always produce Nigeria’s President, stressing that the region believes in fairness, justice and mutual respect with the South.

Speaking during an interview on News Central Television, Kwankwaso said his decision to run alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, demonstrates that not all Northerners subscribe to the idea of perpetual Northern leadership.

“I don’t have to put it in words. By what I am doing now, being vice to somebody from the South, I don’t think that argument can stand on our side,” he said.

Kwankwaso added that the North has always supported equity and mutual respect between both regions, describing those principles as central to his political beliefs.

His remarks come as the NDC prepares for the 2027 presidential election, with Kwankwaso serving as Obi’s running mate.

The former Kano State governor had earlier declined a similar offer to be Obi’s running mate ahead of the 2023 election, citing the prevailing political mood in the North at the time, which favoured retaining power in the region after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year administration.
