Stop pretending to be helpless — Bishop Oyedepo slams Tinubu over insecurity, killings

The General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over worsening insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria, urging the Federal Government to take decisive action against persistent killings across the country.

Speaking during a sermon, Oyedepo lamented the continued attacks by armed groups, saying it was evident that the violence was being sponsored by powerful interests.

The cleric warned that divine judgment would eventually catch up with those responsible for the bloodshed, declaring that “the bubble is about to burst.”

He also prayed against individuals promoting violence and destruction in Nigeria, whether they occupy public office or not.

> “The President needs to act now and stop pretending. You can’t slaughter members of my family and expect me to pray for you. I will pray against you and your household,” he said.

Expressing concern over the government’s response to the security situation, Oyedepo questioned what he described as official silence over the killings.

> “Gunmen kill people every day, and the government is pretending not to know what to do. I’ve kept quiet. When you see God keep quiet in the face of wickedness, it is because the bubble is about to burst,” he stated.

The cleric also criticised restrictions on public preaching, questioning why such issues receive attention while lives are being lost.

> “I have not heard any statement from government quarters against the killings. I’m yet to hear one, sir. Are human lives not of value anymore? And now you mustn’t preach in the bus. Is that an issue? Do you think we are dummies? We kept quiet waiting for God, and God told me the bubble will burst, and when the bubble bursts, no matter where you’re hiding…” he said.

Oyedepo’s comments add to a series of recent interventions by religious leaders expressing concern over Nigeria’s security challenges, economic hardship and the government’s response to them.
