Senator Rufai Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a development that could reshape the political landscape in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Hanga, a close ally of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the NDC Chairman of Dakata Ward.

In the letter, the senator said his decision followed careful reflection and personal deliberation.

“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026.

“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”

Hanga expressed appreciation to the ward executive and party members for the support and opportunities he received during his time in the party.

He said he cherished the relationships he built and the experiences he gained through his political activities within the NDC.

The senator also returned his party membership card and requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register at the ward level.

“I wish the party and its members all the best in their future endeavours,” he added.

Hanga did not indicate his next political destination or whether he intends to join another political party.

His resignation comes at a politically significant time, as opposition parties continue realignments and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
