I have classmates who can verify my education, Tinubu where are your classmates – Amaechi throws jab at President
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has weighed in on the renewed controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s educational records, saying his own academic history can easily be verified by former classmates and associates.
Amaechi made the remarks on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he also defended the Catholic Church over recent criticisms directed at the Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan.
Speaking on the debate over educational qualifications, the former Rivers State governor said there are numerous people who attended school with him and can independently confirm his academic background.
“I don’t have to submit my law degree to INEC. I have classmates. I have classmates in primary school. I can call them now. Christian Obong was my classmate in primary school. I can call my classmates in secondary school,” Amaechi said.
He added that his educational history, including his time at the University of Port Harcourt, is well documented and can be verified by those who studied with him.
“I have classmates in primary school. I have classmates in secondary school. Alex Otti was my junior at the University of Port Harcourt.
“I’m calling people you can ask whether I went through university or primary school or secondary school,” he stated.
Amaechi’s comments come amid ongoing public debate over the documents submitted by President Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The former minister also used the interview to appeal to the Presidency to accord greater respect to Christianity and the Catholic Church following the controversy that trailed Cardinal John Onaiyekan’s remarks after a recent meeting between President Tinubu and members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).
According to Amaechi, the President and his aides should refrain from making comments capable of undermining the Christian faith or its leaders.
“I’m here to say that you need to please beg the President. They should please respect the Christian faith.
“They should please respect the Catholic Church, and they should respect our bishops. I’ve just told you,” he said.
