Uganda: Museveni’s son declares bid to become president in 2031

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, has announced plans to contest for the country’s presidency in the 2031 election.

Kainerugaba made his intention known in a series of posts on X on Tuesday, ending months of speculation over whether he would seek the highest political office in Uganda.

“I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God,” he said.

The announcement has formally confirmed Kainerugaba’s long-rumoured ambition to succeed his father as Uganda’s president.

The 52-year-old, who heads Uganda’s army and the Patriotic League of Uganda, a political pressure group, has for years been viewed as a possible successor to Museveni.

Kainerugaba said he would win 90 percent of the vote with the support of his father.

“Mzee will be my campaign manager,” he said. “Mzee” is an honorific commonly used to refer to Museveni in Uganda.

Kainerugaba had previously said he planned to contest the 2026 presidential election but later withdrew from the race and deferred to his father, who went on to win the polls.

Museveni has been in power for more than four decades.

Since assuming office, the 81-year-old has overseen constitutional changes on two occasions to remove presidential age and term limits, allowing him to extend his rule.

It is unclear whether Museveni plans to seek another term in 2031.
