The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University chapter (ASUU-NAU), has commenced an indefinite strike over the alleged non-payment of the full August salary of its members.

The union said it had activated its “no pay, no work” policy at the university in response to the situation.

At a congress held on Monday in Awka, ASUU-NAU resolved to withdraw its services in line with the standing resolution of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) on salary non-payment.

Under the ASUU-NEC resolution, branches of the union are authorised to withdraw their services when members’ salaries remain unpaid after the third day of a new month.

The branch chairman, Innocent Nnubia and secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, in a statement said: “Today is 7th September 2026 and the University has not paid complete salary for the month of August to our members.

“This makes it more than three times that our members are having this ugly and frustrating experience. The sole reason for this action is the non-payment of the complete salary of August 2026.

“We therefore implore university authorities, and Visitor (President Bola Ahmed Tinubu), to urgently address the situation by ensuring the complete payment of August 2026 salary to our members and ensure that this ugly experience does not repeat itself.”

The Congress subsequently directed that: all members should immediately withdraw all academic and administrative services; and the withdrawal of services shall subsist until the complete payment of August 2026 salary to all members.
