Peter Obi gains ground in Delta as over 1,000 APC members join NDC

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has received more than 1,000 defection letters from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across Delta North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development was disclosed by the former Convener of the Delta Coalition for Equity (DCFE), Chief Alex Ikpeazu, who led the defectors into the NDC during a formal reception in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, on Monday.

Ikpeazu said the group had received more than 1,000 letters from APC members indicating their intention to leave the ruling party and join the NDC.

He attributed the development to what he described as growing dissatisfaction among some APC members and political stakeholders in Delta North, particularly over alleged years of marginalisation, deprivation and neglect of the senatorial district.

“We have received over 1,000 defection letters from people who want to join the NDC,” Ikpeazu said.

The defectors included former party leaders, political stakeholders and members of the Delta Coalition for Equity.

They pledged to mobilise their supporters for the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections and support the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as well as its Delta State governorship candidate, Yovwaye Chris.

Receiving the new members, the NDC state chairman, Dr Oyidobo Richmond, described their entry as a major boost to the party’s structure in Delta State.

Richmond urged the defectors to return to their respective wards and local government areas and commence grassroots mobilisation ahead of the elections.

He assured the new members that the party would treat them equally, regardless of when they joined the NDC.

“I want to welcome you to our great party; this is the party of victory. In the NDC, we don’t discriminate. There are no old members; there are no new members. We are all equal, and that is why we shall win,” he said.

Richmond also attributed the growing interest in the NDC to what he described as Obi’s record in public office and clean political profile.

Ikpeazu, meanwhile, said the decision to leave the APC was driven by concerns over the treatment of Delta North and what he described as the failure of political leaders to adequately address issues affecting the people of the district.

He particularly criticised politicians who moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, accusing them of failing to sufficiently address the concerns of constituents in Delta North.

The NDC governorship candidate, Chris, welcomed the new members but urged them to approach the party with humility and respect for its existing structures.

He described the development not merely as a defection from one political party to another, but as a broader movement built around a shared political objective.

“It’s not decamping; it’s a movement. We welcome you with open arms. We thank the DCFE for organising the party’s growth,” Chris said.

The NDC senatorial chairman, Harron Udaka, also welcomed the defectors, describing their arrival as a significant political development for the party in Delta North.

APC leader in Delta North, Chief Steve Ikpade, and the Coordinator of 100% Overdo, Nacbeth Ojugbeli, also welcomed the new members.

The party leaders urged the defectors to remain humble, integrate into the existing NDC structures and work at the grassroots as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
