Obidient Movement dares Alia, plans One Million-Man March in Benue after Peter Obi convoy blockade

Supporters of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, under the banner of the Obidient Movement, have announced plans to hold a one million-man march in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

The planned demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2026, with participants expected to assemble at Wurukum Roundabout from 9am.

The announcement was contained in a flyer circulating on social media on Friday and shared by Isaac Fayose, younger brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose.

The Benue chapter of the movement described the event as a “One Million Man March” in solidarity with “A New Nigeria.”

The planned mobilisation comes days after Obi’s convoy was reportedly blocked by youths shortly after he arrived in Benue State.

The former Anambra State governor had travelled to the state as part of a visit to Yelwata, where he was expected to meet families affected by the deadly June 2025 massacre.

His convoy was reportedly stopped by youths at Gyado along the Gboko Road, preventing him from proceeding to his intended destination.

The incident triggered reactions from Obi’s supporters and opposition figures, with some alleging that the Benue State Government was involved in the reported obstruction.

The state government, however, has denied knowledge of Obi’s visit and rejected claims that the youths who blocked the convoy were acting on its behalf.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Kula Tersoo, said the state government was unaware of Obi’s arrival.

“We are not aware of his coming to the state, and if it were to be security agents that stopped him, it would have been easy for us to find out what happened,” Tersoo said.

He questioned why security agencies attached to Obi were unable to prevent the reported incident and stressed that security authorities in the host state should ordinarily be notified when a presidential candidate visits.

Tersoo also dismissed allegations that the youths were sponsored by the state government, insisting that the Alia administration did not patronise thuggery.

“We were surprised that youth would stop someone, youth cannot do anything on behalf of the government. Our government doesn’t patronize thugs and in any case Obi is not a threat to the governor,” he added.

Meanwhile, an Obidient supporter, Ndubuisi Nicholas Ifedoro, said the planned demonstration would provide an opportunity for the Obidient and Kwankwasiya movements to demonstrate their presence in Benue.

In a Facebook post directed at Governor Alia, Ifedoro said the groups were heading to the state to make their presence known, while insisting that their participation would remain peaceful.

“You call for it and they have answered you. It’s either you allow democracy to prosper or it will happen the way you want it to happen,” he wrote.

He added: “We are peace-loving Nigerians like our Principal Mr. Peter Obi but do not take our calm or peaceful way for a fool.”

The planned march is expected to draw supporters of Obi and other opposition groups to Makurdi, coming amid heightened political activity and controversy surrounding the former Anambra governor’s recent visit to the state.
