Atiku to address World Press Conference in Abuja Today

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, is scheduled to address a World Press Conference at his residence in Abuja on Friday.

The issues to be addressed by the former Vice President at the media engagement had not been publicly disclosed as of the time of filing this report.

Atiku is also yet to unveil his campaign council for the 2027 presidential election.

The planned media engagement comes two days after the former Vice President hosted former First Lady Aisha Buhari at his Abuja residence.

Atiku disclosed the meeting in a post on his X account, describing his interaction with the widow of former President Muhammadu Buhari as “warm and deeply appreciated.”

“Today, I was delighted to receive former First Lady, H.E. Aisha Buhari,” Atiku wrote.

He did not disclose the purpose of the visit or whether the discussion centred on politics.

However, Atiku used the occasion to highlight the economic difficulties facing Nigerians, particularly the rising cost of essential goods and services.

He said families across the country were facing increasing expenses on food, transportation, education and healthcare, and stressed the need for leaders to prioritise the welfare and future of citizens.

“That is the Nigeria we must build together, a country that works for its people again,” he said.

“We must ease the burden, restore hope and Make Nigeria Affordable Again.”

The meeting with Aisha took place amid growing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku emerged as the ADC presidential candidate after joining the opposition platform as part of efforts to build a broader political coalition ahead of the election.

The ADC had previously explained Atiku’s absence from an opposition summit in Abuja, saying the meeting was primarily focused on discussions involving political parties rather than individual presidential candidates.

Atiku’s engagement with Aisha is also part of a series of interactions between the two in recent months. In February 2026, the former Vice President hosted Aisha, her daughter Hanan and other members of the Buhari family in Saudi Arabia while they were there for Umrah.

Aisha has remained publicly involved in activities associated with the legacy of her late husband, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on July 13, 2025.

In July, she described education and human capital development as some of Buhari’s major legacies while attending the groundbreaking ceremony for a Computer Science Complex at Al-Qalam University, Katsina.

The project is being funded with proceeds from the book, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, which chronicles the former president’s life and public service.

Aisha said the initiative was intended to preserve Buhari’s legacy through investment in education, knowledge and innovation rather than physical monuments.

The political activities surrounding the Buhari family have also attracted attention in Katsina following the emergence of Yusuf Buhari as the APC candidate for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua Federal Constituency seat.

Yusuf secured 6,386 votes in the APC primary, defeating Auwal Daura, who polled 322 votes.

Atiku’s planned press conference is expected to provide an opportunity for the ADC presidential candidate to address the media directly on issues surrounding his political activities and preparations ahead of the 2027 election.
