Obi will honour his word, step down if Anambra debt claims are proven — Tanko

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has said the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, will honour his earlier pledge to step down from the 2027 presidential race if it is established that he left debts or financial liabilities behind as governor of Anambra State.

Tanko made the statement on Friday during an interview on Arise Television while responding to questions about the ongoing controversy over Obi’s financial record during his tenure as Anambra governor.

The controversy followed claims by the Anambra State Government that Obi left outstanding loans and other financial obligations when he handed over power in 2014.

Obi has disputed the claims and maintained that he did not leave outstanding debts, salaries, pensions, gratuities or contractor liabilities for his successor.

During the interview, Tanko was asked whether Obi would withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it was proven that he left debts behind as governor.

In response, the Obidient Movement coordinator said Obi had consistently stood by his words and would take responsibility if the allegations were established.

“My principal has always owned up to his own word anytime, any day,” Tanko said.

The statement comes amid an escalating public exchange between Obi and the Anambra State Government over the state’s financial records under his administration.

Obi had previously challenged anyone to establish that he left the state with outstanding financial liabilities, indicating that he would stop his presidential campaign if such claims could be proven.

The Anambra Government, however, has continued to insist that records from the Debt Management Office show that loans were obtained during Obi’s tenure and that some liabilities remain outstanding.

The dispute has increasingly featured in political exchanges ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with supporters and critics of the former governor offering competing interpretations of the state’s financial position at the time he left office.

Tanko’s latest comments reaffirm the position of the Obidient Movement that Obi remains committed to the pledge he made concerning the Anambra debt controversy.
