Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, has announced that he and 15 other members of the Assembly have formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Very Nigerian confirms.

Amaewhule said the decision became necessary following what he described as a clear and deepening division within the PDP, which he noted has made it impossible for the legislators to continue to operate under the party’s platform.

The Speaker, who made the declaration during plenary, explained that the lawmakers resolved to join the APC after observing what he termed an irreconcilable breakdown in cohesion and internal structures within the PDP.

He added that the prevailing situation in the opposition party compelled them to take a “decisive and forward-looking political step” in the interest of their constituencies and the state.

The defection marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the Rivers Assembly and is expected to have far-reaching implications for the balance of power and governance in the state.

More to come.
