Former AGF Malami faces fresh scrutiny as DSS launches probe into fire arm found in his residence

Immediate-Past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), is facing a new investigation over arms and ammunition discovered at his residence in Kebbi State.

According to sources, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) uncovered the weapons during a search of Malami’s country home.

The items were subsequently handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for a comprehensive probe, as the anti-graft agency is not empowered to investigate firearms.

The exact number of weapons and ammunition remains undisclosed, but insiders say the quantity is substantial enough to warrant a full-scale DSS investigation.

Malami, who was granted bail last week along with his sons—Abdulaziz and Abiru-Rahman, among others—remains in the Kuje Correctional Centre, reportedly having been unable to meet his bail conditions. Sources suggest the delay may be a tactic to stall the DSS investigation into the weapons.

“It is now up to Malami to explain to the DSS how he acquired the arms. That is why he is yet to perfect his bail conditions,” a source said. “DSS operatives are within the precincts of Kuje to invite him, but he raised the alarm upon learning of their presence. The law, however, must take its course.”

The EFCC has clarified that Malami’s continued detention is unrelated to social media claims of his return to Kebbi or any public reception. The investigation into his activities dates back to the tenure of former EFCC Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu and has continued under subsequent leadership, including Acting Chairman Ibrahim Chukkol and the current Executive Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa Olukoyede.

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in Abuja last week ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties linked to Malami and his sons, valued at N213.23 billion. The order allows the family 14 days to prove that the assets were legally acquired, failing which the properties will be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

The forfeiture was granted under the Non-Conviction Asset Forfeiture Clause of the EFCC Establishment Act.

The properties, located in Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, and Birnin-Kebbi, were seized following EFCC’s application to the Federal High Court.
