Tinubu only stepped on metal object, didn’t fall — Presidency
Very Nigerian earlier reported that the Nigerian leader momentarily missed his step and went down in Ankara.
The Presidency has dismissed concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s well-being following a brief incident during his official visit to Türkiye, explaining that the President merely lost his balance after stepping on a metal object.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, made the clarification on Tuesday in Ankara while responding to enquiries about a video that showed the President momentarily stumbling.
Reports had earlier circulated suggesting that President Tinubu fell while walking alongside his Turkish counterpart, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during an official engagement in the Turkish capital.
The incident occurred shortly after President Tinubu inspected a guard of honour as part of the ceremonial reception organised for him.
A review of the footage showed the President briefly losing his footing as a cameraman moved a tripod stand close to his path.
However, Onanuga downplayed the incident, insisting that it was neither a fall nor a cause for concern.
“The President stepped on a metal object on the floor, which made him lose his balance briefly,” Onanuga said.
He added that attempts to exaggerate the moment were unnecessary and misleading.
“This is not a big deal, except for those who want to make mischief out of a fleeting incident. It was a mere stumble, thank God, not a fall,” the presidential spokesman stated.
He assured Nigerians that President Tinubu remained in good health and continued his official engagements in Türkiye as scheduled.
