Igboho cleared for return as Presidency removes him from wanted list
Under the Buhari administration, Igboho was declared wanted, denied a passport and had his accounts frozen.
Arrangements have been concluded for the return of Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to Nigeria, following the removal of his name from the federal government’s wanted list.
Olayomi Koiki, spokesman for Igboho, disclosed this on Sunday, attributing the development to the intervention of prominent Yoruba traditional rulers who prevailed on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to Koiki, the monarchs involved include the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, among others.
Igboho fled Nigeria on July 1, 2021, after a joint operation by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army raided his residence in Ibadan over allegations of illegal possession of arms and ammunition. The operation followed his outspoken campaign against the activities of armed herdsmen in parts of the South-West.
During the raid, three of his associates were reportedly killed, while 13 others were arrested. Igboho subsequently escaped to the Benin Republic but was arrested at the Cotonou Airport on July 19, 2021, while attempting to travel to Germany. He was detained for over a year before his release in March 2022.
Under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Igboho was declared wanted, denied access to a Nigerian passport and had his bank accounts frozen, despite court rulings said to be favourable to him.
In 2025, during a visit to the palace of the Olugbon of Orile Igbon in Oyo State, Igboho openly lamented his prolonged stay in exile and appealed to President Tinubu to intervene. Similar appeals were also made to the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Koiki said the activist has now been officially cleared by the Presidency and may return to the country at any time.
“Chief Sunday Adeyemo has been cleared and is no longer wanted by government authorities. He is free to return to Nigeria and will be fully reintegrated,” Koiki said.
The announcement followed a recent visit by the Olubadan of Ibadanland to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Describing the development as a moment of relief and celebration, Koiki added, “This is a joyful moment for Ibadanland and the entire Yorubaland. With the support of our royal fathers, Chief Sunday Adeyemo will soon be back home.”
The statement also conveyed Igboho’s appreciation to President Tinubu, the traditional rulers of the South-West, and Yoruba supporters across the world for their solidarity throughout his ordeal.
