Tinubu to undertake first Nigerian State visit to UK in 37 Years
The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of King Charles III, according to the royal communications team.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to undertake a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom beginning March 18, Buckingham Palace has announced.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the royal communications team, the visit was disclosed to be at the invitation of King Charles III. The President will be accompanied by his wife, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The trip marks the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a Nigerian leader in 37 years, underscoring a renewed phase in diplomatic relations between both countries.
Records show that Nigeria’s last three state visits to the UK were undertaken by General Yakubu Gowon in 1973, President Shehu Shagari in 1981, and General Ibrahim Babangida in 1989.
King Charles, then Prince of Wales, has visited Nigeria on several occasions, including trips in 1990, 1999, 2006 and 2018, reflecting longstanding ties between both nations.
Although this will be President Tinubu’s first official state visit to the UK, it will not be his first engagement with the British monarch. Both leaders assumed office in May 2023.
Tinubu previously met King Charles in November 2023, ahead of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Nigerian leader later described the meeting as a significant step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation.
In September 2024, the President was also received by the King at Buckingham Palace during a private meeting, where discussions centred on global and regional issues of mutual concern, particularly climate change, according to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.
The royal communications team said full details of the programme for the state visit will be announced in due course.
