Tensions in Rivers as thugs allegedly loyal to Wike set ADC office in Amaechi’s hometown on fire

Suspected political thugs set ablaze a ward office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Friday morning, hours before former Governor Rotimi Amaechi was scheduled to formally register with the party.

Residents said the attack occurred in the early hours of the day, and sources claimed the assailants were loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a former governor of the state and political rival of Amaechi.

Party materials and other items inside the office were destroyed, though no casualties were reported.

“Thugs loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike burnt down the ADC ward office in Ubima early Friday morning. This comes ahead of Amaechi’s registration today,” a resident said.

Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation, remains a significant political figure in Rivers State, and his planned registration with the ADC has heightened political tensions in the area.

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, proved unsuccessful. When contacted, she reportedly asked for a text message and abruptly ended the call.

A subsequent text seeking her official reaction had not been answered as of filing.

The incident underscores the growing political rivalry in Rivers State, especially as key figures position themselves ahead of upcoming political realignments.
