Former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Rauf Olaniyan, has resigned from his position as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo.

His resignation comes in compliance with a directive issued by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which requires all political appointees with intentions to contest in the 2027 general elections to vacate their positions on or before March 31, 2026.

Meanwhile, other key figures are also expected to step down in the coming days. Among them are Adebayo Adelabu and Adebayo Shittu, who is currently serving as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences.

Both men are reportedly preparing to pursue governorship ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Olaniyan announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday, stating that his decision was informed by his intention to pursue his political ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I write to formally tender my resignation from my appointment as Chairman, Governing Council of Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo with effect from 23rd March, 2026.

“This decision is taken in compliance with the directive requiring political appointees and public office holders with political aspirations ahead of the forthcoming 2027 General Election in Nigeria, particularly in preparation for participation in the party primary elections, as stipulated in the 2026 Electoral Act.

“I consider it a great privilege given by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to have served in this capacity and contributed, within my modest ability, to the growth and development of the institution during my tenure. I remain grateful for the confidence reposed in me through this appointment.

“In view of my resignation, I respectfully recommend Barrister (Mrs.) Inime Aguma, to act as the Chairman of the Governing Council. Having worked closely with her, I am confident in her competence, commitment and capacity to effectively provide the leadership required to sustain and advance the objectives of the Council and the College.

“I also wish to place on record my appreciation to the Management, Staff and Students of the College for the support given during the period of my service.”

Olaniyan served as Oyo deputy governor during governor Seyi Makinde first term but later removed and replaced with Barrister Bayo Lawal.
